In Hong Kong, I love strolling along Hollywood Road, where antique stores and galleries line the streets, each offering a glimpse into the past. In Paris, I can spend an entire day at Marché Dauphine, wandering from furniture boutiques to art print stalls. Recently, I discovered a place in London that evokes a similar sense of adventure and nostalgia—Alfies Antique Market, located at 13-25 Church Street.
Antique vs. Vintage: What’s the Difference?
Generally, antiques are items over 100 years old, while vintage pieces are typically at least 20 years old but not quite antique yet. Alfies has a fascinating mix of both, making it a wonderful place for treasure hunt!
Always Ask Questions about the Piece You Love!
The shop owners at Alfies take great care of their goods, ensuring high quality and authenticity. In the UK, trading laws require honesty in sales descriptions. Under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, misleading claims—whether intentional or not—are illegal. If a seller falsely claims an item is an antique when it's not, they could be in breach of these laws. However mistakes can happen, even top auction houses like Sotheby’s, and sometimes shop owners rely on the information they received when acquiring an item. Therefore it’s always good to ask questions and do your own research.
A Curated Collection of Timeless Treasures
Many of the furniture pieces at Alfies, particularly those in the Art Deco style, are beautifully preserved, along with other vintage and antique designs. Art Deco (1920s -1040s) was a major design movement that embraced bold, symmetrical, and modernity. Art Deco furniture is characterised by bold, elegant, and geometric lines. The lighting fixtures are just as stunning, adding a touch of old-world charm. By contrast, Art Nouveau (1890-1910) is more inspired by nature, with curvy, floral motifs, and intricate with intertwining lines.
A Glimpse into the Elizabethan Era
When exploring Alfies with a friend from Southampton, she became captivated by the jewellery, some pieces reminded her of her late mother. We were both drawn to rings inspired by the Elizabethan era (1558-1603) which are delicate, hand crafted with irregularities and shining in signs of age. If a ring truly dates back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, it would be 420 years old! The irregularities in craftsmanship are often a sign go its handmade origins. It is always fascinating to wonder about he stories behind such historic treasures.
A Book Lover’s Delight
During my visit to Marché Dauphine, I bought a book filled with stunning architectural illustrations, though I struggled to read the French text. At Alfies, I stumbled upon a delightful bookstore filled with vintage books and paintings. The shop owner, Charles, was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing not just the stories behind the artworks and books but also fascinating insights into British culture.
For anyone who loves the thrill of a treasure hunt, Alfies Antique Market is a must-visit destination in London, especially in the wintertime. Whether you're searching for rare finds or simply soaking in the charm of the past, this market offers an experience that feels like stepping back in time.
